What is Kendo?

Kendo, literally translated, means “The Way of the Sword.” It is an oriental fencing /martial art developed in Japan.

The practitioners use a bamboo sword while wearing protective armor, and make strikes to the head, wrist, torso, and thrust to the throat, each being awarded a point. The first to win 2 points win the match.

There are deeper principles and theories which surround this raw physical combat to make it a martial art that is more focused on self-development in the areas of respect, discipline, self-control, and overall mental and physical health.

Taking classes here has been so fun! The instructors are patient, supportive, and professional. Learning Kumdo, I get to to strike and yell wearing cool gears and I love that.

Great experience! Convenient location off 50HWY, new facility, and friendly staff. My son wanted to do this (he likes anime), and he's really enjoyed the entire process (especially the belt advancement ceremony). It's unique, designed for kids and instills discipline. Thumbs up!

Ace Kendo Hall is a great place to exercise. Exercising here is great for sweating and getting a good night's sleep, and it's also great for relieving stress and organizing your thoughts. Additionally, when I see the beautiful performances of Kumdo, I naturally get motivated and work harder.

As an immigrant originally from Asia, we are aware that Kendo (Kendo in Japanese or Kumdo in Korean) is a traditional Japanese martial art and it is an activity that combines martial arts practices and values with strenuous sport-like physical activity. Per #KidsKendoIt: "Aside from a healthy body, Kendo will also hone your child's ability to focus, gain self-confidence and enable them to deal with conflict appropriately." While looking for physical activities for my 7-year-old son, we are excited to learn that Ace Kendo/Kumdo Academy is open in the DMV area. During the one-month free trial, my son learns the basic footwork and attacking and loves the masters and teachers there. The curriculum is excellent to blend in the physical activities into the essence of the martial art for young kids to enjoy and have fun while cultivating a vigorous spirit. As a parent, I am glad to see my son learn discipline and how to respect others. Ace Kendo/Kumdo Academy is full of energy and is a great place to learn/practice Kendo/Kumdo.

Road sign on the road at Chantilly grabbed my attention so I registered for a month so far. I highly recommend this place because the location is perfect (in front of entrance to 66), the teacher was nice and kind and most importantly, lesson was easy for beginners. It was my first time to experience Kumdo but so far, I am enjoying it!!

I’m a complete noob, but I’ve always wanted to learn Kumdo (Korean) / Kendo (Japanese). I emailed Ace, and someone got back to me within hours to set up a consultation. I was given a tour of the facilities and set up for my very first private lesson. Now, you do have to buy a juk-do (bamboo sword) to learn with, and there is an initial $50 fee for like registration, and then you’re off to get your 4 week free trial. I’m now in my third week of free trial, and I’ve decided that I want to continue. You learn so much, and it is exhilarating! Granted, the very first time you step into the dojang (or dojo if you’re more familiar with that term), people are yelling at the top of their lungs, the jukdos are clashing against each other, people are making noise with their foot, and it’s all quite surreal. Jolted me awake for sure. But that yelling has a purpose, and as I’m getting deeper into it, even the yelling is fun to be around. I definitely recommend it for office workers like me who live a very hush hush life; all the sounds make me feel like I’m human again. They only recently started, but master Cha is a certified Kumdo coach, and he does have an extensive and impressive résumé in the world of Kumdo. I mean, if he could teach me to swing a bamboo sword around in just a few days, he could teach anyone. Definitely recommend that you give this place a try. Best way to get that daily cardio requirement out of the way, while in a cool looking uniform and swinging a sword.
